Het ontwerp voor de uitbreiding van begraafplaats Duinhof in Lisse bestaat uit een volledige integratie van landschap, gebouw, graven, muurgraven en mausoleums. Landschap en gebouw, leven en dood vloeien op een vanzelfsprekende manier in elkaar over. De gebouwen zijn zowel kantoor, ontvangsruimte en opslag voor de begraafplaats, als laatste rustplaats voor de doden.

The design for the extension of the Duinhof cemetery consists of total integration of landscape, graves, wall graves, buildings and five mausoleums. The buildings, which incorporate offices, storage and a reception area are built into the beautiful surroundings, offering a dignified final resting place.

IJmuiden aan Zee

De enige toegangsweg naar IJmuiden aan Zee voert door een rommelig bedrijventerrein. Badgasten die voor het eerst naar het strand willen keren soms terug, omdat ze denken verkeerd te rijden. De 2,5 kilometer lange weg werd door ons opnieuw ontworpen. Een vier meter brede strook met “populus alba nivea”, een populierensoort die goed tegen wind en zout kan, scheidt recreatief verkeer van vrachtverkeer. Fietsers en voetgangers bewegen op een verhoogd pad naast de rijweg. De grondkering wordt gevormd door een betonnen rand met 5000 glazen vissen. De recreant wordt begeleid door een gordijn van 700 metalen palen, die meebewegen in de wind. ‘s Avonds geven de windelementen licht.

The one and only road to IJmuiden Beach runs through a smudgy business area. Often first-time tourist return without reaching the beach, because they think this road must be wrong. We redesigned the 2,5 km long road into a breath taking experience. A four meter wide strip of ‘populus alba nivea’, a tree species that copes very well with strong wind and salt, divides beach traffic from business traffic. Pedestrians and cyclists use a lifted road to increase the feeling of security. A concrete retaining wall is covered with 5000 glass fish. The bather is accompanied by 700 windelements that wave gently as a curtain. At night the windelements light up.

Inundatiekanaal Tiel|||Inundation Canal Tiel

Het inundatiekanaal in Tiel lijkt een toevallig kanaal op een toevallige plek. Bewoners van Tiel zullen het misschien iedere dag oversteken, en misschien zullen ze het zelfs gebruiken: om te vissen, er langs te fietsen of er naast te picknicken op een mooie zomerdag. Weinigen zullen zich realiseren wanneer en waarvoor het kanaal gegraven is. Nog minder mensen zullen weten dat het kanaal een rijksmonument is en onderdeel uitmaakt van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, de uitgekiende 19e eeuwse verdedigingslijn van Muiden tot aan de Biesbosch.

Het inundatiekanaal heeft historie niet noodzakelijk nodig om zijn kwaliteiten te bewijzen. Als waterpartij is het kanaal goed van zichzelf. Maar zoals nieuwe stadsuitbreidingen vaak worden verankerd aan een monumentale oude verdedigingswal, zo kunnen recreatie, wonen, werken, natuur en verkeer worden gerelateerd aan deze 3 kilometer lange, bijna kaarsrechte, militair-historische streep water. In dit onderzoek worden twee strategieën voorgesteld die het kanaal betekenis kunnen geven in het stedelijk weefsel van de gemeente Tiel.

The inundation canal in the city of Tiel seems to be a random canal at a random site. Inhabitants of Tiel might cross the canal every day, or may even use it: to fish, to cycle along it or to have a picknick on a sunny day. Few people will know why and when this canal was build. Even less people will know that this canal is a state monument and that it is part of the New Dutch Defense Line, a ingenious 19th century system of flooding part of Holland as part of a military strategy.

The inundation canal doesn’t need history to justify its existence. But as new city developments are often anchored to an old fortification wall, the 3 kilometer long military canal can be used to strengthen new housing, working, nature and traffic. In this research we present to strategies that give the canal a more meaningful place in the urban tissue of the city of Tiel.

Domela Nieuwenhuis Plantsoen

Het Domela Nieuwenhuisplantsoen is een driehoek gelegen tussen de Spaarndammerstaat en de Zaanstraat, parallel aan de spoordijk Amsterdam-Haarlem. Het plantsoen is ontstaan na de sloop van de Maria Magdalenakerk in de jaren zestig. Deze kerk, ontworpen door architect Cuypers, was een markante entree naar de Spaarndammerbuurt. Na de sloop is de locatie als parkje ingericht. Het ontstane plantsoen is niet representatief voor de buurt en geen passende entree naar de Spaarndammerbuurt die sterk in ontwikkeling is.

In samenspraak met stadsdeel en een bewonerspanel zijn concepten ontwikkeld voor de herinrichting van het Domela Nieuwenhuisplantsoen met groen en bebouwing. Ze geven een eerste indruk van de kwaliteit van de openbare ruimte en een contour van de bebouwingskaders. Als ondersteuning van de sessies zijn globale ramingen van de parkaanleg gemaakt.

The Domela Nieuwenhuisplantsoen is an empty triangle in the Amsterdam Spaarndammerbuurt district, parallel to the railroadtrack Amsterdam-Haarlem. The park is a left-over after the demolishing of the Maria Magdalenakerk in the sixties. This church, a design of Cuypers, was a striking entrance of the Spaarndammerbuurt. After the demolition the site turned into a little park, which still looked like a gap in the urban tissue.

In cooperation with inhabitants and the city council we developed four concepts for a redesign of the Domela Nieuwenhuis park. All designs included green as well as housing. The study gives a first impression of the quality of the public space and a contour of the housing blocks.

Fietsbrug Marnemoende|||Bicycle Bridge Marnemoende

Twee fietsbruggen werden gevraagd: de een over een weg, de ander over de Hollandse IJssel. We mochten ieder materiaal voorstellen, als het maar geen hout werd. De naastgelegen jachthaven met restaurant had een vriendelijk en rustig gebaar nodig. We bedachten een lange brug van 135 meter die het restaurant bedekt en omarmt, geheel uitgevoerd in hout. Het hout refereert naar de steigers van de jachthaven en brengt het gebied bij elkaar in een lange beweging.|||The client wished two separate bicycle bridges: one over a road, one over a river. We could use any material, as long as we stayed away from wood. What the harbour area needed was a friendly and coherent gesture. We designed one single bridge of 135 meters length, entirely consisting out of wood. The wood covers and embraces the adjacent restaurant, unifying the area in a single motion.

Skatepark Alkmaar

Skaters krijgen van de gemeente Alkmaar een goede skateplek. Alleen, waar? Uiteindelijk bleek de rontonde Bergerhout de beste locatie voor een skatepark. Met het ontwerp geven de skaters ook iets terug aan de stad: ze maken het park tot levende rotondekunst bij de entree van de binnenstad. Alle bestaande bomen en struiken voegen zich in het ontwerp en een nieuwe wandelroute wordt toegevoegd. Voortaan hoef je niet meer te backflippen op een parkbankje, maar zitten wandelaars op jouw flatwedge. ||| The city of Alkmaar wants to provide their skaters with good skating facilities. But where? The centre of the Bergerhout roundabout turned out to be the best spot. The skaters will return Alkmaar’s gift with a living sculpture that marks the entry of the old city heart. Existing trees and shrubbery shape the design. Even a new pedestrian parkway is introduced. From now on you do not have to backflip on a parkbench, but you do have to get rid of the pedestrians sitting on your flatwedge.

Het is gebruikelijk dat een stad een park heeft. Normaal is het park een vlek in de stad.‘s-Hertogenbosch heeft een bijzonder park: de oude stadswal. Het zorgt voor een groene long en een ecologische zone. De stadswal is een ringpark.
De stadswal is een herkenbaar element in de stad, en geeft tegelijkertijd ruimte aan heel veel verschillende landschappen, uitzichten en gebruik. De doorsnede over de stadswal is steeds anders.
De 11 rondelen zijn bijzondere momenten van de stadswal. Ze zijn de rustpunten van de muur, maar te klein voor een Belangrijke Functie zoals bijvoorbeeld de bastions. De rondelen zijn de momenten waarop je van de groene stadsring kunt genieten: het zijn kleine puntparkjes. Ze voegen zich in de eenheid van de stadswal en zijn tegelijkertijd een specifiek punt in het park. De 11 puntparken bij elkaar geven vorm en gezicht aan het stadswalpark. Ze krijgen een functie die gerelateerd is aan hun omgeving. Het puntpark is een uitzichtspunt, een trap, een toren, een schuilplaats, een picknickplek of speelplaats, afhankelijk van de plaats op de wal.
In vorm en materiaal worden de 11 puntparkjes op dezelfde wijze ingericht. De ingreep is vaak minimaal, maar wel herkenbaar.Uitgangspunt bij ieder ontwerp is dat de beleving van natuur het puntpark gestalte geeft. Ieder ontwerp geeft de mogelijkheid om te dienen als drager voor begroeiing – pas dan is het ontwerp voltooid.|||

Usually, a city has a park. Usually, this park is to be found as the green blob on the city plan. The city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, capital of southern province of Noord-Brabant and loaded with historical landmarks, boasts a very special park: the old city rampart. This rampart provides ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch for insiders) with a green lung around the city and an ecological zone between historical centre and housing development beyond .The rampart is a ring park.
Being the recognizable landmark that it is to Den Bosch inhabitants, the ring park provides a multitude of views, landscapes and usage. The ramparts’ sections keep changing.
Its eleven rondels are the ramparts special ‘moments’. Too small to fulfil an Important Function like the bastions do, they provide the wall with resting places. Points where you can stop and enjoy the green city ring: they are small point parks. Point parks comply with the unity of the city rampart while at the same time asserting themselves as specific marks in the park. Together, the eleven point parks shape the ring park and give it character. Each is given a function related to its environment. A point park can be a belvedere or a tower, a flight of stairs or a hiding place, a picnic spot or a play ground, depending on its situation on the rampart.
All point parks are furnished in similar style, material and shape. Oftentimes the interventions can be kept to a minimum but always to recognizable effect. The thing is to make the way people experience nature the starting point in shaping the point park. Each design leaves room for plants, shrubs and trees to grow – which will make the design complete.

Fort Asperen toekomstvisie|||Fort Asperen vision

Van alle forten aan de tachtig kilometer lange Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie is Fort Asperen één van de kleinere in omvang. Groot, daarentegen, in bekendheid en populariteit. Kunst, cultuurgeschiedenis en natuur komen bij elkaar in het mooie stroomgebied van de Linge op een plek die herinnert aan de tijd dat water werd ingezet als wapen tegen een buitenlandse invasie. Hier organiseerde in 1984 Piet Cleveringa de legendarisch geworden tentoonstelling ‘Beelden aan de Linge’, waarna twaalf grote culturele zomermanifestaties volgden die nationaal en internationaal grote bekendheid hebben verworven. ‘Armour, the Fortification of Man’, samengesteld en bedacht door Lidewij Edelkoort, was de meest recente. Peter Greenaway stelde de manifestatie voor 2006 samen, architect Ben van Berkel de manifestatie van 2008.

Omdat de ruimtelijke inrichting van het fort en de omgeving niet optimaal zijn voor gebruik als cultuurfort ontwikkelde bureau sla een toekomstvisie – in drie fasen.

fase 1: Het Kunsteiland
De dam naar het eiland wordt vervangen door een echte brug. De brug maakt het fort letterlijk weer zichtbaar als een eiland, zoals het in de 19e eeuw is aangelegd. Aan de andere kant van die brug vind je een andere wereld, een wereld die in het teken staat van kunst. Het fort, de taveerne en de bunkers fungeren als dragers voor de kunstmanifestaties. De geschiedenis inspireert nieuw ontwerp voor de gebouwen en het landschap. Een wandelpad voert je over het eiland en het fort. De aarden wallen zijn slim ingezet in het ontwerp voor taveerne en terras. En, als het koud wordt en de dagen korter, komen nieuwe gasten: meer dan 100 vleermuizen overwinteren in de kelder van het fort.

fase 2: Linge Acces
Fort Asperen staat niet op zichzelf, het is in 1845 gebouwd als onderdeel van een groter verdedigingswerk, waarin water de hoofdrol speelt. Het Linge Acces is het stelsel waarmee de boel onder water werd gezet: vier waaiersluizen en de twee eilanden Casper (fort Asperen) en Pollux (de wapenplaats aan de overkant van de rivier). We maakten er een aaneengesloten stadspark van, de sluizen werken weer en Caspar en Pollux horen zichtbaar bij elkaar. Een prachtige plek voor kunstmanifestaties, theatervoorstellingen en openluchtconcerten. Bijvoorbeeld een opvoering van Händels Fireworks Music, op boten op het water.

fase 3: Cultuurpark

Natuur, cultuurhistorie en kunst komen bij elkaar in het cultuurpark. Het is een wandelpark, met routes door de boomgaarden, over de grasvelden en dijken. Het is een educatiepark, want de plek zelf is er één waar je de geschiedenis kunt zien, zelfs aan kunt raken. Kunst krijgt een plek in bijvoorbeeld een tijdelijke of permanente beeldenroute. In het park worden tijdelijke of permanente paviljoens geplaatst, op uitnodiging ontworpen door verschillende kunstenaars. De paviljoens worden gebruikt voor kano- of fietsverhuur, kleinschalige horeca, picknickplaatsen of een educatiecentrum Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. |||
The New Dutch Waterline is a rather nifty idea the Dutch had to ward off invading armies, simply by flooding the land. Fortresses were built alongside this line, which is approximately eighty kilometres in length. Of all the fortresses, the fortress of Asperen is one of the smaller ones. In size, that is. For it is great in other ways. Asperen is very well known and popular with visitors. Alongside the banks of the river Linge, the fortress is a delightful place where art, history and outdoor recreation meet. The arts have played a major role here ever since Piet Cleveringa organized the now legendary exhibition ‘Sculptures at the Linge River’ in 1984. Fourteen major art manifestations followed which all gained great renown both nationally as well as internationally. The exhibition ‘Armour, the Fortification of Man’ was curated by Lidewij Edelkoort . Peter Greeneway took care of the 2006 manifestation, the 2008 manifestation was designed by architect Ben van Berkel.

Still, the Fortress of Asperen has not as yet fulfilled its full potential. For it to truly become the stronghold for the arts which it is destined to be, bureau sla developed a new vision – in three phases.

phase 1: Island of the Arts
The fortress becomes visible again as an island by making one single bridge the sole means of access, the way it once was. Walking over this bridge one enters a different world, a world full of art. The fortress, tavern and bunkers act as exponents for the art manifestations. Spacial and historical reminiscenses inspire new design of the buildings and landscape. A walking path leads visitors around the whole of the island and the ramparts are cunningly put to use in the extension of the tavern with outdoor seating. However, as the days grow shorter and the weather no longer allows for ramblings in the open air, the hibernating bats once again take over the fortress’ cellars.
phase 2: Linge Acces
The Asperen fortress is a part of a great defence work in which water is of the essence. The Linge Access is the whole of the system that enabled inundation. Bureau SLA restores the Access to its former glory by integrating its separate parts into one park. The four sluices are working once again and the two islands Caspar (the fortress) and Pollux (the armoury on the opposite bank) can be recognized as the twins they are supposed to be. This makes for a perfect site for open air exhibitions, theatrical performances and concerts. Think of Händels Fire Works Music, for instance, performed on boats floating in the river.

phase 3: Culture Park
Outdoor recreation, history and art meet on the grounds around the fortress on a grander scale in the Culture Park. The orchards, fields and dikes are great for walks, bike rides and picnics. The park can be used for educational purposes in these surroundings where history is tangible in the most literal sense of the word. The Fine Arts blend in by means of a permanent or temporary sculpture exhibition. In this way visitors will not only visit a concert or exhibition, but are persuaded to make a day of it, or even decide to spend the weekend. Which is just what we are aiming for.
